What brought him in
A pattern he couldn't name
He came in exhausted — not from his workload, but from something he couldn't identify. By every external measure he was succeeding: a respected physician, a thriving business owner, a man others turned to for answers. But at home he was disappearing, and at work he was shrinking in ways that made no sense to someone of his capability.
What the work revealed
The partnership table was never really the problem
Using EMDR, we tracked his pattern of withdrawal directly to an early experience — a time when confrontation had been genuinely dangerous and retreat had been the only safe response. Decades later, every time his medical partners dismissed his input or excluded him from decisions, his nervous system responded as if that early moment was happening again. He internalized their behavior as evidence of his own inadequacy.
What changed
He stopped carrying what wasn't his
Once the root experience was processed, the partnership dynamic stopped landing the same way. He could distinguish clearly between what belonged to him and what didn't. He stopped overextending himself to earn respect he had always deserved. He began speaking up — not from desperation, but from a grounded clarity he hadn't felt in years.

Ifeatu Nwankwo is a Registered Psychotherapist and leadership psychotherapist specializing in the intersection of clinical trauma work and professional performance. With over a decade of advanced clinical practice, she works with business owners, executives, physicians, and lawyers on the personal psychological patterns that are showing up — and costing them — in their professional lives.

Her approach is grounded in neuroscience, attachment theory, and the most rigorously researched trauma-informed modalities available: EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and somatic approaches that work at the nervous system level — not just the cognitive one.

She founded Hartwell Consulting Group on a single observation: the most capable, high-functioning professionals are often carrying the most invisible weight. And the strategies that work for every other problem don't touch it.
